Description

Learn new skills, techniques and confidence for paddling in rough water conditions on this course. In order to keep the experience authentic this course is taught in storm conditions. We put in from sheltered water then paddle around the corner to tie together all the other boat handling and maneuvering skills in the best of the rough stuff. Here you will receive coaching and feedback from your instructor.

This course teaches advanced kayaking skills and techniques and therefore demands intermediate paddling skills and comfort paddling in cool conditions.

Skills:

  • Effective bracing and fitting in your kayak.
  • Support Strokes and Dynamic Braces in Rough Water.
  • Maneuvering in waves and wind.
  • Kayak Handling in Reverberation Zones and Around Reefs and Shorelines.
  • Non Sand Landings and Launches.
  • Hypothermia, Immersion and Physiologic Responses to Immersion Part A.
  • Rough Water Hazard Assessment, Reduction and Management Part A.

Required material

Immersion gear for the day, a dry suit is ideal, but a wetsuit and dry top (with gasketted seals) overtop fleece will work. Neoprene booties, gloves, and head cover are necessary to maintain manual dexterity. A kayak specific helmet. Lunch, snacks and drinks to maintain adequate energy and temperature levels throughout the day. A change of clothing for after the course.

Prerequisites

Prerequisite skills and courses are as follows: Intermediate Paddling Skills course, or equivalent; Sculling & Braces course or equivalent; Current lll Navigating Current Channels or equivalent experience; solid Self Rescue Skills. Surf l, Surf ll and rolling are also suggested supplemental skills.
