Description

This course is designed to give you new rescue tools and experience in effecting self and assisted rescues in rough water conditions. This course is taught in storm conditions after paddling around the corner from protected waters with coaching and feedback from your instructor.

This course contains advanced kayaking skills and techniques and therefore demands advanced boat handling skills and a solid repertoire of rescue skills. This course demands that participants be prepared to be in the water for rescue simulations.

  • Self and Assisted Re-entries in Rough Water.
  • Towing and stabilizing in Rough Water.
  • Offensive and Defensive Swimming In Rough Water.
  • Hypothermia, Immersion and Physiologic Responses to Immersion.
  • Rough Water Hazard Assessment, Reduction and Management.

Prerequisites

Functioning knowledge of rescue and tow systems. Rescue l Self Rescue Skills, Rescue ll Intermediate Rescue Skills. Advanced boat handling ability and skills are needed for this course and previous experience kayaking in rough conditions. (Intermediate Paddling Skills, Sculling & Bracing, Current lll Navigating Current Channels, Surf l and Surf ll.)

Required Material

Immersion gear for the day, a dry suit is ideal, but a wetsuit and dry top (with gasketted seals) overtop fleece will work. Neoprene booties, gloves, and head cover are necessary to maintain manual dexterity. A kayak specific helmet. Lunch, snacks and drinks to maintain adequate energy and temperature levels throughout the day. A change of clothing for after the course.
