Looking for some different activities for this year? Want to challenge your class and get them actively engaged in the outdoors? Alberni Outpost can help. We offer a range of activities using Newcastle Island and its surrounding waters as a base. We can tailor the activities to meet your needs from single sessions to multi activity days. We have experienced and enthusiastic guides who will ensure your children have a safe and fun time.
Kayaking: Either on the ocean or at Westwood lake, most sessions are between 2-3 hrs long and involve a mixture of instruction as well as fun. On the ocean we can investigate the wide variety of plant and animal life to be found on the shores of Newcastle Island as well as explore the geology, history and stories of Newcastle Island while we paddle. Guide ratio of 1 per 5 participants.
Big Canoe Tours: Come and experience paddling a big canoe, learn the protocols and cultural significance of these vessels while your class do all the work! We have two Coast Salish style Big canoes, one taking 8 paddlers and the other 18. Additional seating is available in the centre of the seats to allow tired paddlers to switch.
Stand up paddleboarding: Available at our rental location or on Westwood lake. This new sport has a simple learning curve so your class will soon be up and paddling and exploring the limits of their balance! This is a wet activity! So come prepared. Max group size 10.
Orienteering: Develop childrens awareness of maps and navigation, challenge their minds as well as well as their fitness. This introductory course will introduce them to the basics of the sport of orienteering and teach them the fundamentals of navigation.
Problem solving: Want to develop some teamwork? We can plan a selection of activities to promote cooperation and develop teamwork. Find out who your leaders are. Develop and encourage trust and communication skills.
Geocaching: Like treasure hunts? Welcome to the modern version. Learn to use a GPS to track down and find some geocaches and maybe some treasure as well. Encourages a lot of discussion and promotes problem solving abilities.
Who are we? Alberni Outpost is Vancouver Islands leading outdoors stores and rental centre. For the past 6 years we have been offering kayak lessons and tours as well as rentals from our seasonal activity centre. We have a large rental fleet of kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards and big canoes. We have worked with a range of schools, organisations and businesses to provide quality training and learning opportunities. Aside from our regular tours and lessons we are able to custom tune activities and tours to meet your particular needs and budget.
Our Guides. Peter, our activities coordinator, has 15 years teaching experience as an elementary school teacher during which time he instructed children in a wide range of outdoor activities including kayaking, orienteering, rock climbing and backpacking.
He has planned and led a range of team building/problem solving/orienteering pro D sessions for teachers.
Our guides are carefully selected for their experience, enthusiasm and qualifications to provide you with the best and safest experience possible.
