Like the typical fisherman I started fishing at a very young age – grabbing my fishing pole and walking up to the Colliery Dam in Nanaimo for the stocked rainbows or begging for a ride to Westwood Lake for sunfish (perch). My earliest memory of being out on the water was a perfect day on Sprout Lake with my mother letting me captain an old aluminum boat. This led to my love for being on the water and pursuing that record fish we all dream of.
My usual work holidays consist of smallmouth bass derbies all over Vancouver Island and hunting trips where the midday break is catching some trout for dinner in the closest lake. For approximately ten years I have been attending the Father’s Day derby at Quennell Lake trying for the biggest smallmouth and also attend a yearly derby on Salt Spring Island for smallmouth bass that was created by a group of friends.
I focused on lake fishing for years until I discovered how exciting it is to pull in a huge ocean fish – ling cod is my specialty. My next goal is to land one of those monsters while in my kayak and see how far it pulls me.
